Philippines bans death penalty

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the Philippines president, on Saturday signed a law abolishing the death penalty, winning both praise from Catholic Church leaders and criticism from crime victims.

The move came a day before Mrs Macapagal started a European trip during which she will meet Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican.
