Fuel shortages in US energy capital

Petrol prices were reported to have hit an unprecedented $5 a gallon around the US’s energy capital on Tuesday, as the people of Houston competed for fuel at the few stations still open after hurricane Ike.

Power supplies in the fourth biggest city in the US were not expected to be reconnected for several weeks in some areas. Generators had doubled in price to more than $700 (€490, £390).
