Toyota raises pace for GM

Toyota yesterday raised the stakes in the race with General Motors to launch plug-in hybrid cars with a commitment to begin sales to commercial customers by 2010.

Katsuaki Watanabe, Toyo-ta's president, also said the company had begun preparations to mass produce the lithium-ion batteries needed to power the rechargeable cars, which can run farther than conventional hybrids on electric power alone.
