Champion pulls out of Beijing marathon

Haile Gebrselassie, the marathon world record holder, has announced he will not compete in the event during the Olympics this August because of fears about Chinese air pollution.

Mr Gebrselassie’s withdrawal from the marathon is a heavy blow to organisers of the Beijing games, who have laboured in recent months to reassure athletes they are improving air quality in one of the world’s most polluted capitals.
