Merkel to fight Schröder with jobs proposals

Angela Merkel, the German opposition Christian Democrat leader, said on Monday she would pursue a “consistent path of reforms” focused on cutting unemployment if she becomes chancellor after the early general election expected in September.

She was confirmed on Monday as conservative candidate to challenge Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the election, called last week following a heavy regional poll defeat for the ruling Social Democrats.
