EU votes for rating agency rules

Credit rating agencies seeking to operate in the European Union will have to register and be supervised from next year after EU lawmakers overwhelmingly backed proposals to regulate their activities on Thursday.

Members of the European Parliament voted 569-47 in favour of the new regulation, drawn up after heavy criticism of the role played by agencies in the run-up to the financial crisis and the way in which they rated complex debt and mortgage-related products, in particular.
