Arabs’ UN success tempered by internal rifts

When Arab foreign ministers set off for New York last Sunday in search of a United Nations’ ceasefire resolution to the Gaza war, few in the region took serious notice.

The envoys, including representatives of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, were firmly in the US camp and the Bush administration, even in its dying days, was recklessly backing a prolonged Israeli offensive.
