Sir, The impressive group of scientists calling for a new approach to funding scientific research (Letters, June 2) is right to conclude that future economic, environmental and other advances depend on unlocking the unique creativity of exceptionally talented researchers. The Royal Society is shortly to launch a funding scheme that aims to expand the diversity of support available to such people and to give some of them the freedom to follow their ideas to unpredictable discoveries.
