Chinese officials said on Sunday they had successfully foiled two planned terrorist attacks on a passenger jet and on the Olympic Games in Beijing, according to official media.

The flight originated on Friday in Urumqi, the capital of the far western province of Xinjiang, which has a large Muslim population, some of whom are hostile to rule by Beijing.
