Volcker urges extended role for Fed

Paul Volcker, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, said on Tuesday that the Fed’s role as bank regulator and lender of last resort should be permanently and formally extended to include investment banks.

He suggested that there was no going back for the Fed, which last month helped orchestrate the rescue of Bear Stearns and made direct loans available to investment banks for the first time since the Depression.
