Brown still on track despite further rise in public debt

Government debt as a proportion of national income reached a seven-year high as net debt passed through the £500bn level last month, according to official figures published yesterday.

However, the latest public finance figures showed that Gordon Brown, chancellor, was still on track to meet his downgraded December borrowing forecasts.
