PM forced to soften reform of expenses

Gordon Brown yesterday suffered a chastening setback to his drive to reform MPs' expenses, as fierce opposition in the Commons forced him to abandon his main proposal.

The prime minister withdrew his plan to immediately introduce a "daily allowance" for MPs after being warned that scores of Labour backbenchers and some ministers would rebel.
