Democrats scramble for health reform

Democratic congressional leaders were scrambling on Tuesday to find a series of compromises on healthcare reform to satisfy their moderate – or so-called “Blue Dog” – colleagues amid intensifying concern the whole effort could get pushed back until September.

Barack Obama, the US president, who has attracted criticism by liberal Democrats for his reluctance to impose a detailed plan on Congress, took his argument on Tuesday to a “tele-forum” at the AARP, the group that represents senior citizens, in an attempt to press moderates to back reform.
