Opposition to Dubai Ports World’s takeover of P&O is probably loudest in Washington, where members of Congress have been lining up to vent anger about the deal. But arguably the most serious threat to the takeover is emerging at local level, through a series of lawsuits filed in some of the US port cities where P&O operates.
Legal challenges have so far been launched against the deal by the state of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and one of P&O’s business partners in Miami. The lawsuits promise to complicate further a takeover mired in political controversy amid fears that Arab control of port facilities could threaten national security.
