Local lawsuits threaten to sink ports deal

Opposition to Dubai Ports World’s takeover of P&O is probably loudest in Washington, where members of Congress have been lining up to vent anger about the deal. But arguably the most serious threat to the take­over is emerging at local level, through a series of lawsuits filed in some of the US port cities where P&O operates. 

Legal challenges have so far been launched against the deal by the state of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and one of P&O’s business partners in Miami. The lawsuits promise to complicate further a takeover mired in political controversy amid fears that Arab control of port facilities could threaten national security.
