Britain's science community passed a mixed verdict on the fate of the portfolio in Gordon Brown's reshuffle, writes Clive Cookson.

Lord Rees, president of the Royal Society, argued that the challenge for innovation minister John Denham would be to ensure the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills had a strong voice at the cabinet table.
