Brown faces renewed challenge within party

Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, was facing a renewed challenge to his authority yesterday after about a dozen Labour members of parliament demanded a leadership contest to oust the unpopular premier.

Mr Brown was said to be "pretty calm" and his supporters insisted that the rebels were a tiny rump inside the party who rem-ained loyal to Tony Blair, the former prime minister.
