Among Saudi Arabia’s expatriate community, veterans remember the shocking events of 2003 and 2004 when a wave of attacks on foreigners killed dozens and maimed scores more.

Even if they were not directly affected, most knew someone who was. “All the conversations were about how to secure your belongings, how to exit and when and where the next attack would be,” recalls one expat.
