Repsol rumour reopens debate on protection

The rumours suggesting that a stake in Repsol may be sold to Russia’s Lukoil has revived the debate in Spain about whether strategic sectors should be protected from foreign buyers.

On Wednesday, the controversy spilled into the national parliament, where prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was warned by the centre-right opposition that allowing the sale of the Spanish oil group would amount to “monumental scandal”.
