UN takes radical line on development job

The United Nations has taken a revolutionary approach to its hunt for a replacement development chief by inviting candidates qualified for the job, UN officials have told the Financial Times.

Kofi Annan, UN secretary-general, sent a letter to all member countries inviting "any nominations" for the future head of the UN's development programme to replace Mark Malloch Brown after his appointment as UN chief of staff.
