Wendel Investissement, the private equity group, has taken a 6 per cent stake in Saint-Gobain, the French industrial group, it was revealed late on Wednesday.

Wendel declined to say how much it bought the stake for and would only say it made the acquisition sometime this month. Based on Wednesday’s closing price, the stake would be valued at €1.56bn (£1.09bn).
