University anger at forecast of less funding

Lord Mandelson has told universities to cope with tighter government budgets by improving fundraising skills and expanding the proportion they raise from commercial activities.

The business secretary’s comments will anger some academics, who think an increased reliance on business and individual donors will threaten their independence. Others fear that business-funded research is typically focused on short-term scientific discoveries rather than breakthroughs that may require years of patient study.
