Treasury official Tom Scholar was the first port of call for the two Scottish knights - Sir George Mathewson and Sir Peter Burt - attempting to lead an independent HBOS.

A main performer in the government bail-out of UK banks, the 39-year-old head of the Treasury's international and finance directorate handled the nationalisation of Bradford & Bingley this year and the sale of its branches to Santander-owned Abbey.
