Brown fires election starting gun

Gordon Brown set out his stall for the next general election, outlining a “radical vision” for post-recession Britain on Monday, but its ambition will be circumscribed by the bleak state of the public finances.

The prime minister in effect marked the start of Labour’s general election campaign with a policy approach that, by necessity, ditches extra spending on public services and replaces it with “public service entitlements”.
