Gold and oil fall in broad sell-off

Recession fears sparked widespread selling across commodity markets, dragging gold under the $900 level while oil prices sank below $90 a barrel.

The Baltic Dry Index, a gauge of freight cost for bulk commodities, registered its biggest absolute fall since records began in 1985, with a drop of 5.74 per cent.
