German authorities yesterday confirmed a case of bird flu at a poultry farm in Saxony, eastern Germany. Health officials in Dresden said it was preparing for a preventative cull at the farm near Görlitz after a duck carrying the H5N1 virus was discovered there.

Further tests are being carried out to determine whether the virus is of a type dangerous to humans. The incident is the first case of bird flu in Germany since December 2007.
