Apartheid ‘legacy’ still hurting economy

South Africa has failed to overcome many of the privations of apartheid in spite of 14 years of stable macroeconomic management, according to an important report on Africa’s biggest economy.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development praised the government for policies that have since 2004 delivered growth consistently above 5 per cent, but found “notable weaknesses in the economic record to date, especially as regards unemployment, inequality and poverty”.
