US airlines pull out of a tailspin

The biggest US airlines stand to return to profitability next year, a stunning turnround for an industry that appeared to be heading toward the biggest crisis in its history a few months ago.

A surge in fuel prices had overwhelmed airlines, draining profits and sending them scrambling to slash costs, tack on new fees and raise money from sceptical lenders.
