Brown damps talk of early election

Gordon Brown moved swiftly on Friday to damp speculation about an early general election after his position was fortified by a surprise by-election victory.

As some senior MPs said the time was ripe for a snap poll, the prime minister insisted that his “undivided focus” would remain on the economy as the UK slides into its worst downturn for decades.
