Alitalia in chaos as flights are cancelled

Alitalia was thrown into chaos as the loss-making airline cancelled flights and workers blocked Fiumicino, Rome’s main airport, while union leaders negotiated with the government and a takeover consortium with the clock moving closer to bankruptcy.

Talks with ground staff broke up after only 15 minutes over disagreement on where to start negotiating the new contracts, a union official said. Talks with other Alitalia sectors were to continue.
