Democrats grasp symbolic prize of Virginia

Barack Obama clinched a hugely symbolic victory in Virginia, handing the Democratic party its first win in the state since 1964 and highlighting the massive shift in the country’s political mood.

With 97 per cent of precincts counted, Mr Obama had won 52 per cent of the vote against 48 per cent for John McCain.
