Blair backs Merkel on climate targets

Tony Blair, British prime minister, yesterday racheted up the debate among the world's richest nations over climate change when he backed German proposals to set long-term reductiontargets for greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change will dominate what should be a tense three-day summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial economies beginning on Wednesday as Germany, current chairman of the club, and the US squabble over how best to tackle global warming.
