Wolfgang Tiefensee: A mission to complete unification

Wolfgang Tiefensee, Germany’s new minister for eastern Germany, appears ready to talk himself out of his own job.

Speaking to the Financial Times on the sidelines of the political negotiations last month to finalise the grand coalition agreement, he argued that, a decade and a half after re-unification, Germans should stop thinking of the former communist east as a “special zone” with unique problems, and should start recognising the achievements reached since 1990.
