Barack Obama cast a slight figure on the stage as he addressed his last rally before election day.

Above him floated a mini dirigible with the words “Boilermakers for Obama”, bobbing between the flashing lights of secret service helicopters. Around him was a crowd perhaps 90,000 strong, crammed into a park outside the old civil war town of Manassas, Virginia.
