Peru all but abandoned on Thursday its efforts to persuade the Japanese government to extradite Alberto Fujimori, the former Peruvian president, to Lima, where he is accused of ordering the murder of civilians and of other crimes.
Denise Ledgard, legal attaché of the Peruvian embassy in Tokyo and the person in charge of Peru's extradition request, said on Thursday she was returning to Lima. There are no immediate plans to replace her.
