Tote put up for sale on open market

The Tote will be sold off on the open market after the government finally rejected a bid by a racing consortium to take over the state-owned betting agency, the Financial Times has learned.

The decision, which could be formally announced before parliament goes into recess on Wednesday, brings to a close the tortuous attempt to fulfil a 2001 Labour manifesto pledge to dispose of the 540 Tote betting shops and pool betting business.
