Israel clears outposts after US pressure

Israel has removed two more settlement "outposts" in the occupied West Bank, a move that appeared designed to blunt US criticism of the country's settlement policy at a time of heightened tensions between the two allies.

The expansion of settlements – a major stumbling block in stalled talks on a Palestinian state – will loom large at a meeting later on Thursday between US president Barack Obama and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority.
