Hong Kong leads broad rally on Asian markets

Hong Kong shares started the new year with their best day in three weeks, gaining 4.6 per cent to lead a broad rally among those Asia Pacific markets open for trading. Telecommunications and commodity-related stocks showed some of the best performances.

Stock markets in mainland China, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand were closed for holidays.
