Google has sold its 2.3 per cent stake in Chinese online search engine Baidu.com, clearing the way for the two companies to compete head-on for the country’s 111m internet users.

Google, which purchased the stake well before Baidu’s spectacular initial public offering last summer, sold 749,625 Baidu shares, according to a US regulatory filing late on Thursday.
