UN warns of food inflation effects

Rising food prices are likely to force developing countries to follow Russia’s example and impose retail price controls to avoid social unrest, the United Nations’ top agriculture official has warned.

Jacques Diouf, director-general of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, said prices had become an “even more serious problem” in the past few weeks as wholesale increases began to be passed on to consumers.
