A present from the past can be a timely surprise at Christmas, and there is no shortage of seasonal exhibitions competing for attention. This year prices have been kept sensibly low, with top London galleries offering plenty for under £1,000.

One of the oldest and most illustrious names on Bond Street, the Fine Art Society, has caught the mood with its current exhibition High art, Low prices, where works by big names are available at modest cost. Owning a Millais or a Samuel Palmer may seem ambitious but etchings by both artists are available for £750, while the same sum will secure “Adam and Eve in Heaven”, a wood engraving by Eric Gill. An etching by Whistler is £950.
