Banking: Taking more account of efficiency

The global slowdown has forced Greek banks to focus on cost-cutting ahead of an expected round of bank consolidation.

For much of the past decade, banks relied on high economic growth rates in Greece and other south-east European countries – fuelled to a large extent by a credit boom – to produce returns on equity above 20 per cent annually.
