Brown calls for bigger Afghan army

Ambitious plans to add an extra 40,000 troops to the Afghan army will not be enough to meet Afghanistan’s security needs, Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, warned on Thursday.

The US recently endorsed a $17bn plan to build the size of Afghanistan’s army to 122,000 in the next five years in an attempt to shore up the country’s deteriorating security situation.
