Mixed response to US Fed's emergency move

US and European equity markets endured a day of extreme volatility as investors reacted to an emergency cut in US interest rates while Asian shares suffered their biggest one-day falls since 1990.

The Federal Reserve slashed the Fed funds rate by 75 basis points to 3.5 percent - the biggest reduction for 25 years - and the first inter-meeting cut since September 2001.
