When Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0 to claim this year’s European football championship, Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was among the first to congratulate club president Joan Laporta.

As a Barcelona fan and self-appointed head of Spain’s sports ministry, Mr Zapatero was entitled to bask in some of the glory of one of the club’s best seasons on record.
