The UK “will avoid a deep and prolonged recession” thanks to heroic efforts on the monetary and fiscal fronts, economist David Miles predicted earlier this year.
But threats to the economy remain, says Mr Miles, who has since been appointed to the Bank of England’s rate-setting monetary policy committee. Among the most significant is that households will cut consumption and national savings rates will rise to levels not seen since the aftermath of the recession in the early 1990s.
