The government’s advisory body on illegal drugs risks collapsing under fresh resignations after the home secretary sacked its chairman for criticising the tough policy on cannabis.

In a letter circulating on Monday, many of the remaining 28 members of the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs demanded a meeting with Alan Johnson amid “serious concerns” about future handling of their advice.
