Private equity eyes huge funds

The world's top private equity firms are making significant progress on one of the most ambitious fund-raising rounds ever in spite of declining returns on old deals and growing difficulties in making new acquisitions.

Firms including Apollo, TPG, Blackstone, Bain Capital and KKR are in the process of raising tens of billions of dollars, with growing allocations by sovereign wealth funds helping make up for smaller investments by pension funds.
