Tribune in bankruptcy filing

The crisis in US newspapers yesterday claimed its biggest victim when Tribune Company filed for bankruptcy protection, a year after its $8.2bn leveraged buy-out by property tycoon Sam Zell.

Mr Zell, a Chicago native whose history of reviving distressed assets earned him the nickname of "grave-dancer", had hoped to forge a new model for newspapers but was hit by an accelerating advertising decline.
