US housing starts rise to nine-month high

New US residential building picked up in August, rising to a nine-month high on the back of a surge in multi-family home construction and adding to evidence that the housing market slump is abating.

Separately on Thursday the labour department said that the number of US workers claiming unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, offering hope that businesses have eased the pace of job cuts.
