HSBC set to launch retail operations in Japan

HSBC is set to launch retail banking operations in Japan early next year and plans to open as many as 50 branches there within four years, according to people familiar with the situation.

Japan remains a glaring omission from HSBC's retail banking network in Asia, and its long-awaited move underlines its optimism in the continued recovery of the world's second-biggest economy.
